Black Crepe Myrtles - Everywhere!
Crepe Myrtles Turning Black?
Crepe Myrtle Bark Scale, where it came from or how it moves doesn’t matter, the result is always the same. The Crepe Myrtle bark, leaves (and anything under it) are turning black. CMBS, is a relatively new problem, I first saw it in Houston 18 years ago. Now it’s everywhere.
Insects (like every other living thing) excrete their waste. Usually right where they are eating. It will stick to leaves, branches, shrubs and flowers below, or a statue you may have in the garden. When the excrement drops, it sets, and then a fungi called Black Sooty Mold begins to take up residence (in the excrement) and the black starts to stain everything.
What do you do?
We address the insect problem. You may have even tried that with something from Bayer, or another manufacturer but it didn’t work. You’re not alone, most Insecticides do not work on Scale unless they are perfectly timed with a specific life stage.
They need to be treatred consistently to have any success at all. CMBS is a regular part of our Quarterly Shrub and Ornamental program.
